Local Guide

Jim Thorpe: the "Switzerland of America"

The inn sits a few minutes from Jim Thorpe's Historic District, close to the gorge, the trails, and the train. Here is how to spend your days, with rough times from the inn.

Cliffs and river in the Lehigh Gorge near Jim Thorpe

Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

Open-air train rides through the gorge, most colorful in fall. Departs from the historic station downtown.

Paid · ~10 min walk to station

D&L Trail

A 140-mile rail trail for biking and walking that runs right through town. Rent a bike and ride the gorge section.

Free · ~10 min walk to trailhead

Historic District & Mansions

Broadway's Victorian streetscape, the Asa Packer Mansion, and the Old Jail Museum are the classic first-day walk.

Free to stroll · ~10–15 min walk

Whitewater Rafting & Biking

The Lehigh River runs dam-release rafting trips in season, plus gentler tubing and lakeside swimming at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Paid · ~10–20 min drive

Hickory Run State Park

Hawk Falls is an easy 1.7-mile out-and-back hike; the Boulder Field is a national natural landmark unlike anything nearby.

Free · ~25 min drive

Winter: Ski & Snowshoe

Three major ski resorts sit within easy reach, and the gorge trails are groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Paid / Free · ~20–40 min drive

Where to eat

  • Molly Maguire's Irish Pub (5 Hazard Square): the classic downtown pub dinner after a day on the trail.
  • Muggles Mug: a Harry Potter-themed cafe for coffee and sweets.
  • Marion Hose Bar: drinks in a converted 19th-century firehouse.
  • Weekday caution: some kitchens close early outside summer and fall weekends. When in doubt, ask Carrie.

Parking & transport traps

  • Downtown parking fills fast on fall weekends; arrive before 11 a.m. or expect a walk.
  • North Street is residential and quiet: no through traffic noise, but street parking near the inn is limited.
  • Train and rafting outfitters run on their own schedules; book the scenic railway ahead in October.

Safety & getting there

  • The Lehigh River looks calm and is not: wear a life vest for any river activity and use licensed outfitters.
  • Trails are rocky and cell signal drops in the gorge; carry water and a charged phone.
  • Winter driving in the Poconos means ice on shaded hills; allow extra time.
  • Jim Thorpe is about 90 minutes from Philadelphia and about 2 hours from New York City by car.
